Max Martin started this petition to St. John's County School Board

Given new evidence on the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, CDC has updated the guidance for fully vaccinated people. CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Children should return to full-time in-person learning in the fall with layered prevention strategies in place.

The statistics for our area are staggering - cases, hospitalizations, severity of disease with the current variant, elective surgeries being canceled, 8-10 hour waits in emergency rooms, etc. Currently both the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics are recommending that students K - 12 wear masks at school, whether vaccinated or not. How are we as a school district ignoring our current community conditions and recommendations by national and local health experts? How can we keep our students who are under 12, and don't have a choice for vaccination, safe?

At this time last year, with cases in St. Johns County being fewer than they are now, you and the school board were implementing health and safety measures to ensure that the faculty and students remained as safe as possible for the upcoming school year. Why is it now then, while cases are higher and rising, and there is a more contagious variant in the community, have you and the board decided to pull back measures?

You may argue that children aren't that affected and that they will be okay. I will argue that one severely ill child is one too many, and I'm not sure that this school board would want to take that risk. Would you risk your life by spending 8 hours a day in the schools without being masked or vaccinated?

Please implement mandatory masks for anyone in a St. John's County school for the 2021-2022 school year. We need to protect our students and community.
