SAVE South Shields’ Regent Cinema and Mecca Bingo Hall FROM DEMOLITION

The Issue

“WHAT IS THE PETITION ABOUT?”

The grand old Regent Cinema and Mecca Bingo Hall on Dean Road in South Shields is UNDER IMMINENT THREAT FROM DEMOLITION. This impressive building is more than bricks and mortar. It has provided entertainment and joy to the masses for eight decades and even survived the devastating bombings of 1943 during the Second World War.

“WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW?”

There is already planning permission to convert the unique 1930s structure into apartments on the upper floors and local retail and leisure at street level, with private car and cycle parking located behind in the existing courtyard. Despite this sound plan, the borough council want to knock it all down and replace 85 years of built and cultural heritage with an empty plot of land awaiting ‘future development’.

“WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?”

Dear Readers, Friends, Strangers: Let’s not allow the bulldozers and wrecking ball be the final chapter of this magnificent local landmark. Please spend just a few moments of your time now to help protect an architectural gem for the future by signing the petition. The Regent has recently been assessed for Listed Building Status by Historic England to help further the campaign. Your support is much appreciated - before it’s too late.

WE URGE THAT THIS HISTORICAL ICON BE SAVED FROM DEMOLITION - TO PROTECT OUR BUILT AND CULTURAL HERITAGE AND TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - FOR THE GOOD PEOPLE OF WESTOE, SOUTH SHIELDS AND BEYOND. THANK YOU!
