The Issue
This petition is regarding the parole request for Nick Scherr. Scherr, a resident of Mobridge South Dakota is currently serving a 100 year prison sentence for the 1980 murder of Candace Rough Surface of Kenel South Dakota. Candace was brutally beaten, raped and murdered by Nick Scherr and his cousin James Stroh. After beating, raping and shooting Candace multiple times Scherr and Stroh tied Candace to the bumper of the truck they were driving with a chain and drug her to the shore of the Missouri River where they disposed of her body. She was not found for some 9 months.
Due to the heinous nature of Scherer’s crimes..... the brutal beating - raping her multiple times, and the eventual murder of Candace Rough Surface ....the 15 years that Scherr and Stroh spent covering up their crimes ....the denial of Scherr when the crime was brought to light in 1995 and his total lack of accountability since it is the opinion of the signers of this petition that Nicholas Scherr should NEVER be granted parole.
We do not support his efforts to gain his freedom and feel he should never ever be granted parole. Everyone should be offended and insulted at the crimes Scherr has committed and that he would in any way seek the support of the Native American people or the citizens of South Dakota to gain his freedom.
Scheer needs to spend the rest of his life in prison. The brutal nature of this crime warrants that he NEVER be granted parole.
In addition to this petition I would ask that the signers of this petition also contact the South Dakota Board of Pardons & Parole and the Governor of the State of South Dakota and appeal to them directly to deny the parole of Nicholas A. Scherr.
His parole hearing will take place at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield South Dakota on May 13, 2014, a time has not been set as of yet.
