The Issue

PlayStation is one of the most successful console brands in history, building its strength on emotion, storytelling, and unique experiences. Although it also has its competitors, such as Nintendo and Xbox, Sony consoles have firmly resonated with many gamers worldwide, with some of its most popular titles including "Marvel's Spider-Man," "Ratchet & Clank," "God of War," and "Uncharted." However, I'd like to clarify that Sony intends to once again cut off the popular PlayStation Store from the PS3 and PS Vita in the future. Furthermore, in January 2028, the developers intend to discontinue the production of physical copies of games. Why do I disagree with this decision?

Let's start with what I consider the most important point: the digital store for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. It's a known fact that these brand products are already an old generation – the PS3 was released in 2006, and the Vita – the last handheld to date (not counting PlayStation Portal, which is solely a portable remote play for the PS5) – in 2011. Although they haven't released any games yet, these consoles are still very much alive. Even though subsequent generations are being rolled out, many adult gamers who have fond memories of the 7th and 8th generation still remember them fondly and will definitely return. I bet many of them still want to buy DLC for games they recently bought, or games that were only released digitally, such as Rayman 3 HD, released in 2012. The PS Store for these devices was supposed to be shut down in 2021, and I want to remind you that even though there was little time left, fans were furious, which strongly influenced Sony's decision. Fortunately, even though they wanted to focus on the PlayStation 5, which is already half a decade old, they made a wise decision for the coming years. Now, the plan from five years ago has been revived. The PS Store for these consoles is scheduled to be shut down, and in July 2027, it's set to disappear worldwide. And here we go again...

I know that many other older consoles have long since had their stores shut down. Most recently, in 2024, Microsoft decided to shut down the digital store for the Xbox 360. But that's a different world. The Xbox Series has backward compatibility with all its predecessors (except the Original Xbox). The PS5 only has backward compatibility with the fourth console in the PlayStation family, released in 2013. Furthermore, the PS Store offers a few native PS1, PS2, and PSP games, but that's not enough. The PS Vita ALSO doesn't have a successor. What's the point of cutting off these old ones from the store, anyway? So that people have nothing left to do on them, they just mod and reinstall games they didn't have time to buy, despite some issues, right? Every now and then, there are updates designed to make jailbreaking more difficult, so if that's the case, what's the point of closing the PS Store for these consoles?

And now, speaking of physical game releases... I don't want to start a fight, but I have the right to express my dissatisfaction. On PC, I can understand that digital has probably taken over this hardware forever. But you have to understand that just because digital is becoming popular doesn't mean everyone likes it. It's unclear what Microsoft or Nintendo will decide in the future, but there's so much to be said. Many gamers STILL prefer to buy games in boxes, and if they buy digital, they only buy them if they're available in that version. If players get bored with a game, would they be able to sell it? Boxes are one thing, but digital copies are another, because after a few days, there's no way to return them.

So, please, Sony. For over 30 years, you've been creating a legend and a brilliant story. PlayStation is not only my passion, but also a part of my life, as it probably is for many other gamers. You may have some flaws, but we know you have very good intentions, so please make a very wise decision again and don't give up on physical releases, and especially don't close the PS Store for PS3 and PS Vita...
