Somos gente de mar y queremos Dos Mares vivos.

Durante generaciones, los pescadores ribereños de Baja California Sur hemos sido testigos de cómo los barcos industriales de otros estados han depredado el Mar de Cortés y el Pacífico sudcalifornianos; esta enorme flota de camaroneros, atuneros, sardineros y palangreros viene a nuestras aguas y saca sin límite todo lo que en ellas habita. En una sola noche, cualquier barco de estos puede capturar lo que a nosotros nos tomaría hasta un año.

El único instrumento legal efectivo que existe para evitar que esto siga sucediendo es una Reserva de la Biosfera, porque hemos visto pasar diferentes esfuerzos o acciones y hasta ahora ninguna ha funcionado.

Durante más de cuatro años, en DEPESCA hemos propuesto, impulsado y socializado esta herramienta de conservación marina que traería enormes beneficios para nosotros y para todos los mexicanos, pues estas aguas y la gran riqueza natural que en ellas habita son patrimonio de todos.

Proteger los mares de Baja California Sur es garantizar la seguridad alimentaria de México entero, porque los pescados y mariscos que se consumen en el país provienen principalmente de nuestro estado. Es proteger uno de los ecosistemas marinos más ricos y biodiversos del mundo. También es hacer justicia social ya que es una demanda de hace más de 30 años. Finalmente, es la mejor manera de preservar los usos y costumbres de las y los pescadores.

Por si fuera poco, la Reserva de la Biosfera Dos Mares —de 19.2 millones de hectáreas— prohibiría de manera definitiva la amenaza de la minería submarina y contribuiría a fomentar un turismo ordenado y responsable en uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes de México.

Necesitamos que nuestra propuesta sea conocida por todas y todos, queremos ser escuchados, queremos ¡Dos Mares vivos!

We are DEPESCA and we propose the Dos Mares Biosphere Reserve in Baja California Sur
 
We are people of the ocean, and we want Dos Mares alive.

For generations, the coastal fishers of Baja California Sur have witnessed how industrial ships from other states have plundered the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean of Baja California Sur; this enormous fleet of shrimp, tuna, sardine and longline vessels come to our waters and take without any limits everything that inhabits them. In a single night, any one of these boats can fish what it would take us up to a year.
 
The only effective legal instrument that exists to prevent this from continuing to happen is a Biosphere Reserve, we have seen different efforts or actions take place and so far none of them have worked. For more than four years, DEPESCA has proposed, promoted and socialized this marine conservation tool that would bring enormous benefits for all Mexicans, for us all, because these waters and the great natural wealth that inhabits them are patrimony that belongs to everyone in the planet.
 
To protect the seas of Baja California Sur is to guarantee the food security of all of Mexico,the fish and seafood consumed throughout the country come mainly from this state. To protect them is also to save guard one of the richest and most biodiverse marine ecosystems in the world, protecting them is also doing social justice since we’ve had this demand for over30 years. Finally, it is the best way to preserve the uses and customs of coastal fishermen.
 
The Dos Mares Biosphere Reserve -of 19.2 million hectares- would definitively prohibit the threat of underwater mining and contribute to the promotion of organized and responsible tourism in one of Mexico's most important tourist destinations.
