Social media to be illegal for children under 16

The Issue

In recent years, the rapid growth of social media platforms has brought unforeseen and distressing consequences. I am personally compelled to speak because of the grave impact social media has had on vulnerable youngsters, including my own loved ones and community members. I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of bullying and viral videos that spiral out of control, leaving emotional scars and, tragically, sometimes resulting in suicide.

Social media, while a powerful tool for connection, has also become a conduit for harmful content. Underage children are regularly exposed to inappropriate material that they are neither emotionally nor mentally equipped to handle. This exposure can lead to damaging behaviors, distorted perceptions of reality, and overwhelming emotional distress.

Cambridge University researchers found that children who spend more than three hours a day on social media are twice as likely to develop mental health issues. The American Academy of Pediatrics echoes this concern, citing increased rates of depression and anxiety among teenagers linked directly to social media usage.

Governments have a responsibility to protect their youngest citizens. Enacting legislation to make it illegal for children under 16 to have social media accounts would be a significant step in safeguarding their mental health and ensuring a safer environment for them to grow and learn.

Restricting access until the age of 16 will provide children with more time to develop critical thinking skills and emotional maturity needed to navigate the complex online world. It would empower parents and guardians to have more control and oversight of their children’s interactions and digital exposure.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the protection of our children’s futures and challenging social media platforms to put comprehensive safety measures in place for younger users. Together, we can create a safer digital landscape for our children. Please sign this petition to support the wellbeing of children and call upon lawmakers to take immediate action.
