Social Media and the Town of Innisfil

The Issue

We ask that the Town of Innisfil implement two important changes to the Town's official social media accounts

  1. We strongly recommend that the Town stop using the social media platform X (formally Twitter) and delete the account. X management has proven itself to be a supporter of hate speech, nonconsensual photo generation by AI, and disruptive of Canadian sovereignty. The Town's posts could literally be placed adjacent to content including Nazi supporters or pornographic images.
  2. We respectfully request that the Town creates an account on Mastodon, a social media platform that has no algorithm driving negative engagement, does not collect or sell end user data, and is operated in Canada by Canadians.

We recognize that the Town has to communicate with the community using social media platforms that are popular with residents, as long as those channels are not harmful to the Town's image. But long-term We believe the goal should be less reliance on U.S. based platforms by building a community on an open source social media solutions. That's showing leadership in achieving digital sovereignty and protecting residents of Innisfil from being exploited by foreign technology companies.

If you would like more information on Mastodon, or assistance in creating an account and getting started, please complete the Contact US form at elbowsupdigital.ca.  We will provide resources to guide you, and help launch and promote your account on Mastodon.
