Freedom of information
The Issue
An SNU Minister has been investigated for misconduct by the Spiritualist National Union and their identity is being withheld from its members. This person has been suspended for a period of nine months and placed under a supervision order but no details of the misconduct have been released. The public statement issued by them can be read here;
I believe it is in the best interests of everybody within the Spiritualist organisation and also those seeking Ministerial support to know the nature of ANY misconduct. Knowing whether their misconduct has been prejudicial, harassment, of a sexual nature, bullying, or financial has a huge bearing not only on how it’s dealt with, but also in terms of the consequences relating to safeguarding etc
Due to the rules of data protection this information is currently being withheld and once reinstated there is potential for harm if the nature of the misconduct isn’t made public. As a Minister of religion who is likely to come into contact with vulnerable people, those seeking help need to be assured they can trust the person involved in their support and care. Without adequate information this is in doubt.
If this petition is supported well, we can demand transparency from the SNU, be reassured that the Ministerial codes of conduct are adhered to and the safety of the general public can be assured. We can also demand that people in roles of trust who breach codes of conduct are dealt with appropriately, and honestly by the SNU in relation to the seriousness of their misconduct AND this information is made available to the public.
If this petition is NOT supported, then potentially Ministers, Officiants, and leaders within this organisation are given access to vulnerable, and sensitive people and the potential for harm is huge.
I would urge all people who have and interest in Spiritualism, and specifically any members of the Spiritualist National Union to support this petition. Demanding transparency in all matters relating to the conduct of its Ministers and Officiants is a matter of public safety.
