"Smart" Traffic Systems to Improve Efficiency and Reduce Emissions

"Smart" Traffic Systems to Improve Efficiency and Reduce Emissions
The Issue
Have you ever found yourself sitting alone at a red traffic light, with not another human or vehicle in sight, waiting up to two whole minutes just for a color to change? I have many times!
In the era of increasing technological advancement, it's time for our streetlights to become "smart". We need to fix this outdated system and implement intelligent lighting on our streets.
Our urban infrastructures could greatly benefit from the efficiency of smart traffic lights, cutting unnecessary idling time, improving traffic flow, and reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that personal vehicles alone in the U.S. produce about 1.5 billion metric tons of CO2 each year. Reducing unnecessary idling at traffic signals could play a part in lowering this alarming statistic.

Intelligent traffic lights are an investment in our present and future. They have the potential not only to make our lives easier by improving traffic flow but also contribute substantially to countless environmental benefits.
Together, we can bring about this impactful change. Sign this petition to demand that local and national lawmakers prioritize the implementation of smart lighting systems in our cities. A few less minutes at a red light today could mean a greener and brighter future for us all tomorrow.
