Slow the Truck Down!

Slow the Truck Down!
The Issue
This petition is addressed to:
• Anna Hopkins (City Councillor Ward 9)
• Josh Morgan (Mayor of London)
• Thai Truong (London Chief of Police)
• Rob Flack (MPP Elgin-Middlesex-London)
• Karen Vecchio (MP Elgin-Middlesex-London)
We the residents of Southwest London request that immediate and concerted action be taken by the addressed parties to make our roads and streets safe from irresponsible motorists. Every day a significant proportion of commuters pass through our neighbourhoods at speeds which far exceed the posted limits. This can be easily observed on Longwoods Road, Wharncliffe Road South, Colonel Talbot Road, Westdel Bourne, Southdale Road West, Pack Road and Bostwick Road. What is further, and even more egregious, these motorists also regularly ignore the lights and signage of school buses, speeding up to pass through stop signs which have clearly been extended. This type of reckless behavior has also been observed at crosswalks equipped with flashing lights. And quite recently it resulted in a very serious tragedy.
In light of these unacceptable conditions, we recommend that:
First, traffic studies be undertaken so as to determine the full extent of the problem and come up with recommendations for how to better design our roads, not for the purpose of more efficiently accommodating an even greater volume of commuters, but for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the people who live in our neighbourhoods.
Second, the London Police send police cruisers to set up speed traps in our neighbourhoods on a regular basis.
Third, rumble strips and additional signage be installed along our major roads. These signs could specify that fines will be doubled during those times when school buses are operating, as well as indicate to drivers how fast they are travelling above the posted speed limit.
Fourth, that a law should be passed which would make it mandatory for all school buses to be equipped with a Ministry of Transportation approved red light camera system for automatically issuing tickets to any and all drivers who flagrantly disregard the lights and signage of school buses.
And fifth, that public information campaigns be organized to warn motorists that their endangering the lives of others will no longer be tolerated.
