SIT March 14 Should be made a Holiday for Holi Celebrations

The Issue

Raised amidst the vibrant and joyous culture where Holi, the festival of colors, forms a significant part, it has always been a huge part of our lives. We celebrate Holi with our loved ones, family, and friends, sharing laughter and creating memories. However, as students and staff of our college community, our ability to fully indulge in this celebration is compromised. March 14th, the day when this vivacious occasion falls, is currently not acknowledged as a holiday in our college. This restricts our capacity to be part of this event that carries immense cultural significance.

Holi is not just a day for festivities but also provides an opportunity for togetherness. The unity and camaraderie that occur during these celebrations promote cultural understanding and harmony among the college's diverse student population. Reputable institutions around the world are acknowledging cultural holidays like Holi to foster multiculturalism and inclusion. Data from NCES report (2019) suggested that colleges fostering such understanding have seen a rise in overall student satisfaction and performance.

We humbly request the college administration to recognize March 14th this year as a holiday to allow students and staff alike to participate in Holi celebrations. By acknowledging this auspicious occasion, our college can lead the way in promoting cultural inclusivity and respect for diversity, hence contributing to an enriching environment.

To ensure that academic schedules are not disrupted, we propose that the classes scheduled for March 14th be either preponed or postponed to a Sunday, thereby accommodating the celebration of Holi without affecting the college's academic commitments. This solution allows both students and staff to fully embrace the festivities while maintaining the integrity of our academic calendar.

Please make a difference by signing this petition and let March 14th this year be a day of joy and celebration. Together, we can honor and imbibe the spirit of Holi in our college community.
