The Issue

Problem:

Single-parent households are most affected by poverty. Families with only one parent are forced to balance working to provide for their children and being at home to care for their children. This is especially true for single-mother households. Single mothers are five times more likely to live with an income below the poverty line of $15,650 a year. Because of this, they are unable to subscribe to nannies or caretakers, which means that they aren’t able to work enough hours to provide for their family and be present in their child’s life.

Goal:

Our campaign aims to support single mother households financially and emotionally while also giving their children the opportunities they are potentially missing out on. This is because they find it difficult to work long hours since they have  to be at home to care for their children. By bringing awareness to this problem, we will be able to help mothers gain financial security as well as enroll children in enrichment programs that they wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.

Non-Profit Organization and how it meets the goal:

The Sparkle Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is “to make sure single mothers and their children have a sparkle in their eyes.” They do this by giving single mothers access and aid to enrichment programs for their children and to a network of resources that mothers can go to for support. In addition, they help care for single mothers’ children, offer microloans, and help get the mothers get their lives back on track.

San Rafael City Mayor
Responded
[Note from Change.org: Our platform provides a tool that allows petition starters and supporters to email decision makers directly from our platform. The message below is a response from Mayor Colin, sent in reply to one of these emails from the petition starter.] I couldn't agree with you more and appreciate your engagement on this important issue. I recall seeing this petition months ago and notified both Change.org as well as the Sparkle Foundation at that time as I'm not a decision maker on this issue. Social services in San Rafael are provided by the Marin County Board of Supervisors through their Health, Human Services Dept. The Council adopted a 3 year Strategic Plan this year and you may find it interesting as it lays out the priorities for the City and, in October, the Council will be reviewing the Year 1 workplan is you'd like to provide input. https://www.cityofsanrafael.org/fy2025-2028-strategic-plan/ Warmly, Kate Kate Colin (she/her/hers) Mayor, City of San Rafael
