The Issue

We all know that we have to minimize waste as much as possible, to help preserve the environment of our planet, and to help this, Recycling has become an important job in our homes in recent years.

But it is often difficult to know which bag, or box, to put some things in. For example, a paper cup might not be made from paper, it could be plastic. Metal bottle tops, could be either aluminium or steel, but should these be mixed together?  Then there are some shaped containers for fruits. These often look a bit like cardboard; but are they? Or are they plastic?

To help with better re-cycling there needs to be a simple coding on product packaging, and on simple products, where appropriate.

So, here is my suggestion.

A simple coding should be introduced, where manufactures will be asked to print a code on all the packaging for their goods. And, where appropriate, on the goods themselves.

I suggest calling this the 'R Number'. And here is a suggestion for the labelling:

R0           Cannot be recycled.

R1           Cardboard, card, paper, magazines, cardboard cartons

R2           Steel cans, foil

R3          Aluminium cans and foil

R4           Plastic Cartons, cups, plates, packaging, carrier bags

R5          Small Batteries

R6           Aerosols

R7           Polystyrene cups, plates, packaging

R8           Ink cartridges

R9           Glass bottles, Glass jars

The British Government have proposals for improving recycling, which is all about the efficiency of the process in moving recycled items from our homes. But what is the point if items are put into the wrong box or bag before they are collected??

A strong support for this petition could change this and give our society a more effective re-cycling system
