New Signs Fail Inclusion of Deaf Students, Blind Drive Homeowners, & Special Needs Bus Stop

Attention was given to the neglected 44th and Cantrell intersection but no Deaf School, no Bus Stop Ahead, nor Blind Drive signs have been installed by the city. Instead, the City of Decatur issued a statement regarding yard signs in an attempt to intimidate citizens out of making their own signs when and where they fail to keep our roadways safe.

The hills make it impossible for drivers to see, so pedestrians must rely on their hearing in order to safely cross in front of the school and intersections near it.  We must do the same leaving our blind driveway; my mother-in-law is deaf and our blind driveway is also a special needs bus stop.  Drivers deserved to be warned and our children, especially those who can not listen for traffic, deserve protection.

One city employee says too many signs won't help; another claimed the remaining requested signs would be up before the next City Council Meeting. The Council meeting is today and there are no more signs up now than when the call with said conversation occurred. 

Updates to this area include:
-Old stop signs were replaced with reflective stop signs
-1 School Zone Ahead and 4 Stop ahead signs were installed
-Deer Crossing Signs were installed
-Trimming of tree branches so some of the signs could be seen

I plan to speak at City Council this evening at 5:30 pm with another parent. If anyone would like to join me, please be on the 3rd floor of the Civic Center by 5:25 pm. If you have documents to distribute to the council they can be given to the police officer or city clerk prior to the meeting.
