Hi friends,
It's been a long time since our last update, but rest assured the work behind the scenes to create a fan-funded ownership group in MLB PDX keeps moving. Two HUGE updates:
1) We found a way to finance the deal through equity crowdfunding
Many of you have said to me, "Love the idea, but can it even be done legally?" The exciting answer is YES!
Through research we uncovered the exciting story of Chattanooga Football Club. In 2019, Chattanooga FC announced that it would become the first soccer team in America to offer fans true ownership. They used a financial vehicle called regulation crowdfunding (Reg CF) that permits a company to raise up to $5 million from unaccredited investors (read: fans) in a 12-month period. At the close of the month-long campaign, 3,254 fans across all 50 US states and 30 countries invested nearly $900,000 in this innovative third-tier professional soccer team.
Just imagine how this would translate into major success for a fan-friendly franchise like Portland in a big-four sport like MLB. The results could shock the world.
2) We met with Portland Diamond Project...and it went AMAZING!
We just got a meeting with Portland Diamond Project to make our initial pitch for the idea of a fan-funded minority ownership group. Overall the meeting went excellent! Check out the video for a quick 1-minute summary of key takeaways.
Major thanks to Portland Diamond Project for taking time to talk to us and being open to hearing our idea. No doubt there's a still a long way to go to make this a reality, but I left the meeting feeling more excited than ever before and so appreciative for the work being done by Portland Diamond Project to bring MLB to Portland.
Love the update? Help us spread the word! Send all your friends to change.org/PeoplesDiamondProject to sign the petition. We can make this happen!
Thanks,
Derek
