Dear Governor Rauner,

I am writing to ask that you please sign HB 3219. This bill would allow pharmacies in the state of Illinois to participate in a one-year voluntary pilot project to distribute a four-digit locking cap to patients with painkiller prescriptions. 

The bill passed without opposition in the House and Senate and is a great start to addressing the opioid abuse epidemic in society today.

Opioids are frequently obtained illegally through diversion by people who do not have a written prescription. Drug overdose death rates in the United States have more than tripled since 1990, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prescription painkillers cause three out of four prescription drug overdoses. 

I ask that you sign House Bill 3219 into law and help save countless lives in Illinois.
