Sign for Student Safety at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf

The Issue

On Friday November fourth, a 4th grade teacher stormed into my son's fifth grade classroom.  This teacher yelled at my son's classmate and said that he sounded like a zoo animal, she should call 911 and that he needs to learn to act normal.  The student has Tourrettes and is Deaf, he can't hear the volume of his vocal tics, nor can he control them or know that they might be disruptive to another person/class. When my son alerted me to the story he told me that "he can't control it."  The boy went home and told his mom he wanted to hurt himself and was scared to return to school.  His mom had to drag him back to school after missing two days and a safety plan was set in place where her son shouldn't have to see the teacher.  That failed on Thursday.  The boy covered his face when he saw her.  No apology from the school or teacher has come to the family and there has been no noticeable disciplinary action.

The 5th grade homeroom teacher did report the incident to the school and HR; however, this teacher remains in her classroom.  The teacher that verbally abused the kid is rallying support from other 3rd-5th grade teachers and they are out casting and retaliating against the 5th grade teacher that appropriately reported the incident.  The teacher that behaved unprofessionally has been at the school for decades and many reports are coming in of similar patterned behavior from her.  *** I have been corrected, the teacher is rallying support from additional teachers outside their core team as well. They are trying to push out the teacher that reported the abuse! ***

The mom of the boy did speak at the school board meeting and the parents of the kids that witnessed the behavior have reported and have asked what is being done to keep our kids safe.  None of us have received any action plans of what will be done to prevent her from behaving like this to our children.

Phoenix Day School for the Deaf needs to remove the teacher in question, they know who she is and discipline those who are retaliating for the appropriate behavior of a mandatory reporter.  Deaf kids deserve to be safe at school.
