Because of climate change, the natural disasters, or the typhoons and storms in particular heightened its intensity. Mountain ranges, specifically the Sierra Madre has saved Luzon many times from what could have been more disastrous outcomes from today’s deadly typhoons and storm surges; it remains to be our greatest protective barrier against storms and is definitely irreplaceable.

Therefore, it’s sad to think that everytime there’s a storm and calamity, it’s just the time we only remember the sacrifice of Sierra Madre. I can’t really think if this mountain can still protect us because we, the people, are the ones who destroy it, we are crushing the thing that serves as our shield everytime there’s a strong wind and severe rains. 

The DENR has issued an environmental compliance certificate that allows the contested Kaliwa Dam project in the Sierra Madre mountain range to go ahead, part of a wider push to secure water supplies for Manila and surrounding areas. We are losing our natural barriers against storms because the government is allowing corporations to destroy our mountains.

I’m pretty sure if Kaliwa Dam project will continue to operate, we will regret this someday. Because if the nature damaged, we can never get it back to its old form. And I also believe, there’s numerous ways to solve the water shortage than to wreck our precious mountains. Sierra Madre have always saves us, now it’s our turn to save and protect her. Save Sierra Madre, No To Kaliwa Dam!
