The clothing store Shein has a good front. The dirt-cheap prices, the cute clothing, the variety of items... it's a shopper's dream. But what's behind the facade of the company?

As it turns out, not very many good things.

The conditions for workers are terrible. They work eighteen hours per day, with only a day off per month. They are also severely underpaid with a mere 4,000 yuan per month (roughly $552 USD). According to Glamour Magazine, women often wash their hair during their lunch breaks.

Not to mention that they're not environmentally friendly, either. In their clothing, they are using lead and numerous microplastics. Each bag the clothes come in contributes to a lot of landfill waste. Last year, they contributed 1,800 tons to the atmosphere alone.

Finally, they don't sell very morally-conscious items. They sold a necklace in the shape of a swastika and have been accused of stealing designs from smaller labels. 

Shein has built up a good reputation through word-of-mouth and TikTok, but at its heart, it is a genuinely vile company. Bugs were even found in a Tiktoker's bag!
