Ban the selling, purchasing, and importing of horses for Meat in Canada

The Issue

A Nationwide Call to End the Slaughter of Horses for Meat

Ever since I can remember, I have loved horses. Their grace, intelligence, and emotional depth have always captured my heart. From the moment I was old enough to be around them, they’ve been an essential part of my life. I’ve had the privilege of meeting countless horses—some of whom were rescued from horrific fates. If not for a twist of luck or human kindness, they would have been slaughtered for meat like so many others.

Across Canada, over 25,000 horses are estimated to be slaughtered each year, often after being transported long distances in inhumane conditions. Many are former pets, riding companions, or working animals. These deeply emotional and sensitive creatures endure immense suffering at every stage of this process—from auction to feedlot, to transport, and ultimately to slaughter.

The killing of horses, donkeys, and mules for human consumption is a cruel practice that disregards their profound contributions to our lives, cultures, and history. For centuries, they have worked beside us, carried us, and offered us companionship. They deserve better than this fate.

This petition calls on the Government of Canada to take national action:
Ban the slaughter, purchase, import, and export of horses, donkeys, and mules for meat—whether domestically or abroad.

Let’s stand together to reflect a more compassionate and ethical vision for Canada—one that honors the dignity of these remarkable animals and puts an end to needless suffering.
