Today I attended a Survival Day dawn service, which was respectful and inclusive, and had a fantastic feeling of hope and community. Yet, in the media posts about the ceremony, I am seeing the same kind of racist comments that Jake Danby sent to his mates in text messages right after he had killed two Aboriginal men.
The lack of respect, lack of education, and lack of humanity towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in this country needs to be addressed.
At the ceremony, there was a reminder of how long legal systems in this country have failed First Nations people, and enabled murderers to brag about their killings, and get away with it. It's about 230 years.
I'm not going to let my anger fuel more hatred, this country has plenty of that already. Instead, I want to use my anger to keep pressing for positive change, education of the next generations, and hope, that we can make some real difference.
