Remove Stebbins HS and Mad River MS Indians mascot #NativeAmerican #NotYourMascot
The Issue
The use of Indians as mascots is disrespectful of Native Americans. To have this mascot in a publicly funded institution of learning is not appropriate. Despite the lower number of Native American students at Stebbins High School in Dayton, OH, the racism and negative stereotypes of Native Americans are brought upon them every school day. Despite the superintendent's argument that the mascot is not a racist item, numerous school districts and professional athletic teams have stricken that mascot for a more appropriate mascot. If the school district does not change their mascot to another mascot like the Bobcats, they should not be allowed to have funding from federal agencies that have renounced the use of racist mascots. The cost of switching to another mascot will be less than any lawsuit that will eventually be presented in the future by frustrated parents that will not tolerate any further denigration of their children. Many have seen the effects of the racism that is shown towards native students. Name-calling and bullying by fistfights and absurd remarks are common towards native students. It seems that the native students are the few that are not protected by the school district's anti-bullying initiatives. This mascot needs to go in favor of another.
