Hi! My name is Nate McCarten. This petition is not in any way meant to be offensive or rude towards the Shenendehowa School District. Over the course of the 2014-2015 school year our school has come a long way with the new gender neutral bathrooms and that is great! Although they have helped one of the diverse communities in our school they have failed to help another. On the schools "Grapevine" there were a couple of questions asked about students going into school and going to prom in Drag. Now at first the answer was "Ask your principal" but as more and more questions came in the answer quickly became a straight no. Now I know to some of you this issue may not be as important as it is to others but put yourself in a Teenage Drag Queens shoes, you already find it hard to fit in at school and your one dream is to be able to wear the gorgeous prom dress that you see online or in stores but you can't because although your school says they accept everyone, but they are subtly oppressing a whole community. Now besides fitting in with your pears you have a whole entire seperate issue. Your school won’t let you be you. Imagine how that must feel, not being able to be yourself at that so called "special night". While everyone else is having a blast, you are faking a smile and feeling miserable. That's how it felt for me at my junior prom. Now with that being said I believe that if we raise enough awareness and get as many signatures possible this can be changed. If we work together and show that we are supportive of the Drag queen Community I believe Shenendehowa will change its minds! Please take a minute to sign your name and let your voice be heard!
