Dear Supporters, Please join us tomorrow morning at 10am on the junction of Chelsea Road and Union Road at the threatened Elm Tree. The Sheffield Star are coming to photograph the tree and all our supporters. This is a great opportunity to show the Council just how many of us want to save our roadside trees! This is a tree of International significance as it is one of the very rare Elm trees that survived Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970's. As a result it is one of perhaps only 1000 Elm trees over the age of 30 years in the whole country. It may even be immune, hence it's international significance. The newspaper seems genuinely keen to make a big story of this, so the more people the better. We have also just discovered that this tree is the home of a colony of rare White Letter Hairstreak Butterfly. These butterflies exclusively lay their eggs on Elm Trees, so their population was decimated following the Dutch Elm Disease epidemic. This precious tree is also listed as a Heritage Tree on the internationally recognised Tree Register - the Ancient Tree Hunt database/website. http://www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk/recording/tree?tree=f6624f9c-0b41-4290-a0db-681f7c4fe7da So we now have an internationally significant Elm Tree with a nationally significant population of a rare butterfly. Surely this should be enough evidence to stop this tree being felled? Don't count on it! Please write to Cllr Terry Fox and cc Streets Ahead, Nikki Bond, Cllr Julie Dore to complain. terry.fox2@sheffield.gov.uk streetsahead@sheffield.gov.uk nikki.bond@sheffield.gov.uk julie.dore@sheffield.gov.uk If you could also cc CMtrees@outlook.com that would be great, as I am collating and recording all the complaints for Nether Edge. Remember this tree is healthy and structurally sound, the only reason that this and 71 other trees in the area are listed for felling, is because of pavement and kerb displacement! And don't forget to ask for your unique reference number to make sure that your complaint is registered on their system and you can chase it up if they don't reply. We can do this! Here's to GREEN 2016! All the best, Carly Mountain On behalf of all at Save NE Trees
