Sevier County Bus Depot to implement separate buses for Primary through High School
The Issue
The Sevier County Bus Depot, at this time utilizes ONLY ONE bus and route that picks up all students, regardless of grade level. This means allowing primary level students at age 5 to sit right next to 18-year-old high school students all at the same time. Students have no age level seating designations. They do not have any signed seats for the various grade levels it is a FREE for ALL seating. This policy feels irresponsible and reckless, and could potentially account for major safety and endangerment issues or violations. This can lead to bad enfluence of older students learning bad habits. That they then act out at school and or repeat at home.
Just as our school system segregates students based on age and grade level, we should extend the same practice to their transportation. This would ensure that each child is exposed only to age-appropriate behavior and contributes to the overall safety and well-being of our children during their daily commutes with routes lasting two hours or more.
As a caring parent that has had dealings with the Sevierville School System, I have personally experienced the disheartening effects of the current Sevier County School bus system. My son has encountered several disturbing instances on the school bus: bullying, smoking, sexual behavior, use of the "N" word, adult gestures, and fights, and that's just off the top of my head. There is also an issue with overcrowding, which forces some students to essentially sit in another student's lap! My son has told me about these very distressing issues, and it has gone on long enough. I honestly often wonder when I see my child get on the bus if I'm endangering him. No parent should worry like that! It's about time that the adults in the school board and the bus system do something to change it.
Therefore, we implore the Sevier County Bus Depot to reevaluate its current transportation policies and implement age-segregated bus routes. By doing this, we can protect our children from premature exposure to inappropriate behavior, reduce the frequency of bus-related incidents, and ensure that every child's bus journey is safe and comfortable.
