In Seoul Eunpyeong District (which became a Sister city with La Habra in 2005) right now at this moment, there are countless dog slaughterhouses, markets and restaurants operating where the dogs, who are kept in appalling conditions in row upon row of cold steel cages, tortured for their entire lives, end up being slaughtered in the most inhumane ways one could ever comprehend, such as by electrocution, hanging, beating or simply by being boiled alive while the other dogs look on powerless to change their horrific fate. There are also many “Health Food Centers” dotted around the district which commonly sell dog elixirs and cat elixirs (also known as dog soju and cat soju). Wu-Yeong Kim, Head of Eunpyeong-Gu, promises to “do my utmost to make Eunpyeong-gu a city that brings happiness to the residents” and to “lay the foundation for Eunpyeong-gu to become a city that can be comparable to major cities in the world”. If Wu-Yeong Kim and the people of Eunpyeong-Gu truly want to realise this aim then they will need to take action now to tackle the medieval practices going on in their district with regard to animal welfare as this is still a place where dogs and cats are routinely tortured, neglected and brutally slaughtered - so they can be served up as food and drinks for their many (so-called) ‘health food’ centers and restaurants. Let’s show Seoul Eunpyeong District that in order to be comparable to other major cities across the world they need to end their resident’s barbaric and medieval practices and make their district a place where the dog and cat-meat trades no longer exist!
