The Snake River in the Pacific Northwest has just been identified as the most endangered river in the United States. By breaching the four lower Snake River dams we have an opportunity to save this river and two national treasures—iconic wild salmon and the salmon-dependent Southern Resident orcas. The science is clear. Without breaching, Snake River wild salmon will go extinct. Breaching will uphold Native American treaty rights, increase room on the grid for clean renewable energy, boost the region’s economy, and bring about the largest river restoration project in our nation’s history.
Please take action for the whales immediately by sending an urgent message to Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland (link below). We are targeting Secretary Haaland because she cares. She is the first Native American to hold a cabinet position. As a Congressional representative, she backed the Green New Deal, and sponsored a bill to protect 30% of our nation’s lands and oceans by 2030.
Let her know you strongly support breaching the four lower Snake River dams in eastern Washington to begin this year, to recover endangered salmon and Southern Resident Killer Whales, and the river. And that infrastructure and stimulus proposals recently introduced by Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson must be included in the Biden administration infrastructure legislation, but implemented after dam breaching has begun.
This is an all-out-push. We need this message to go viral.
Your support is critical. Powerful Washington Senator Maria Cantwell has announced that she is willing to let the lower Snake River wild salmon and critically endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales go extinct, because saving them is “contentious,” and there is not enough support for breaching the lower Snake River dams.
Really—not enough support? Thanks to you, more than 828,000 people from every state and more than 125 countries have signed our petition calling for dam breaching to save the salmon and orcas. This is massive support. The petition has been brought to the attention of Senator Cantwell and other politicians repeatedly. They know it exists.
Now we need all hands on-deck to bring about a sea-change in the way we steward our beautiful Northwest.
