Background

Fruits are everywhere on this world. They can be found in every country and each country has their own unique local fruit. Indonesia has a lot of their own local fruits, such as durian, mangga harumanis, pisang mas and many more. But one problem that comes out is that local people don’t buy them again, but instead buying imported fruits. As a result, there will be no one to take care for them to grow and later on extinct. Based on the news, Indonesia’s one popular fruit, cempedak, is almost extinct due to a lot of factor, and one of them is that jackfruit is more popular and more or less has the same taste. This is one serious problem since those local fruits were passed on from our ancestors.

Problem

Written by Jovanka

As we all know, every country has its own local fruits. In Indonesia, some local fruits are endangered due to some factors, such as geographical and economic. Factors of this problem started with the exports and imports of fruits from other countries. Many people prefer consuming imported fruits rather than the local ones. Because of this, there are problems with both buyers and sellers. Buyers can’t find any more local fruits and sellers start selling imported fruits for more benefit. This can cause negative impact for the future of Indonesian local fruits that have been passed on for many years by our ancestors.

Impact

Written by William

The problem arise about Indonesian local fruits can result negative impacts for the country. For example cempedak. Cempedak is one of Indonesia local fruit that is popular in Indonesia. It’s competing with imported jackfruit which almost tastes the same. Most of Indonesian buy jackfruit since it’s imported and has higher quality. As a result, cempedak sellers will compete with jackfruit sellers, as well as other cempedak sellers. As time pass, they will get not get much profit because the fruit that they sell are not bought a lot buy peopel. The local demand will be low and the people that lives by selling those fruit, will be decreased in the side of the economic. Some time later, sellers will not take care of growing those fruit and the fruits will be extinct from culture and the world.

Our Suggestion

Written by Michelle

After knowing that the impacts are very concerning, some of us may be wondering how to save the local fruits. Therefore, here we have some suggestions that could overcome and solve the problem:

1. Eat more local fruits, not only to save those fruits but there are many benefits in eating local fruits such as, it has more nutrients, the flavour hasn’t changed much since it was picked and it supports the local farmers to grow more fruits.

2. Promote more local fruits, adults need to promote local fruits to kids in this generation and future generation so that local fruits will always be well-known and not forgotten.

3. Try to make food using local fruits, by doing that, people will need local fruits to make the dishes.

4. Provide better education for farmers, well-educated farmers will have bigger possibility to grow good quality of seeds that produce sweet, large and fresh fruits which can attract people to eat local fruits.

5. The government should consider the amount of imported fruits, by this way, it increases the demand of local fruits. People who loved imported fruits will change their interest into local fruits due to the limited products and the quite expensive price.

Closure

As we all have read, the problem of local fruits has become more serious and serious that they are endangered now. This problem gives a big impact both now and later in the future. One of the simplest and easiest way to preserve them is to buy and choose them rather than imported fruits from other countries. Not only us, but also the government should participate by considering and control the number of imported fruits so that they will not affect the local fruits’ existence. We hope that at last, we can realize and participate in preserving the local fruits.
