The Issue

Midnight the cat was more than just a stray; he was a gentle soul who, after being rescued, found temporary refuge at the Lake County Michigan Animal Control. For 27 days, Midnight waited patiently in the shelter, adapting to his new environment and winning over the hearts of those who met him. Scheduled to be neutered and  already up for adoption, Midnight was on the brink of a new beginning.

However, a tragic and avoidable incident cut his life short. During a routine cleaning of his litter box, Midnight playfully placed tiny, non-threatening marks on the hand of an officer. Rather than seeing Midnight's actions as innocent and typical cat behavior, the shelter officers made the sick decision to euthanize him.

Midnight was a friendly and adoptable cat, not a threat. His unwarranted death has left us seeking answers and demanding justice. No animal should meet such a fate, especially when the circumstances hardly justified such extreme action. It is vital that Lake County officials review their policies and practices regarding the treatment and handling of animals under their care. Furthermore, it is imperative to adopt more humane responses to animal behavior that include staff training and behavioral assessments by professionals.

Every animal deserves a second chance and a fair evaluation—a chance that was cruelly taken from Midnight. We call upon Lake County Animal Control and local authorities to reassess how they manage the animals in their care, ensuring incidents like this never happen again. By implementing better protocols and educating staff, we can prevent the loss of lives like Midnight's in the future.

Join us in demanding justice for Midnight. Let's stand together to ensure that compassion and understanding are central to how animals are treated and evaluated in shelters. Sign this petition to make sure Midnight's story leads to positive change.

Call Sheriff Rich Martin at 231-745-2712 and Prosecuting Attorney Tom Evans at 231-745-2775 Tell them you want Justice for Midnight the cat and you want to see the Animal Control Officers either removed from duty or a change in county policy on giving animals that they deem aggressive or unadoptable a second chance of life through contacting rescues throughout the state and out of county professional behavioral evaluations before any thought of killing animals under the protection of the County Animal Control.
