Off the back of our hugely successful event on a cold and misty January afternoon - when over 200 of you turned out in support of our efforts to Save Queensbury Tunnel - we want to swamp MPs with letters to encourage them to turn the heat up on the Minister, Simon Lightwood MP. The aim is to force him to take action to save the tunnel, rather than allowing National Highways to block it up.
We’re asking everyone - near or far - to take part in a new letter writing campaign, to write to your MP even if you have done so before. Queensbury Tunnel is a regional, if not a national asset, so you don’t have to live nearby to write. The more letters MPs get, the more they likely are to act.
This time we want to urge MPs to lobby the Minister to force National Highways to give the £7.5 million it wants to waste blocking up the tunnel - from which the public will get no benefit - to Bradford Council or the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, so that they can manage and restore the structure, making it greenway-ready.
An ambitious active travel network with the tunnel as its centrepiece would deliver £3 in social, economic and tourism benefits for every £1 invested in it, according to a recent feasibility study. It’s the only option that makes any sense.
Every letter really does help, so please write and share widely. You can amend the letter’s wording as you see fit.
The process is easy and takes less than a minute to complete. The system even directs your letter to the correct MP based on your postcode.
