We would like to express our considerable thanks to those who kindly supported our recent CrowdJustice appeal. We were hoping to raise £6,500 to cover the ‘pre-action stage’ of a Judicial Review of the government’s decision to spend £7.5M of public money abandoning Queensbury Tunnel, permanently ending any prospect of the structure being repurposed as part of a Bradford/Keighley to Halifax active travel network. Less than four years ago, £7.2M was spent on strengthening work to ensure the structure could fulfil such a role.

We passed our target in less than three days and a further £2,600+ has since been donated. Solicitors Leigh Day have now written to the government seeking the formal written evidence upon which the Minister for the Future of Roads made her decision. This will inform a judgement as to whether there are grounds to seek a full Judicial Review.

Queensbury Tunnel is a remarkable Victorian structure, presenting many challenges but with the potential to deliver considerable future benefits as a transport asset. No value would be derived from abandonment; it would be a total waste of taxpayers’ money. The proposal is driven by National Highways’ determination to rid itself of the liability.

We will keep you informed about developments.

Many thanks for your support.
