You are one of almost 11,000 people who signed our ePetition seeking to secure a beneficial future for the disused railway tunnel under Queensbury in West Yorkshire.

We would like to see this grand Victorian structure reopened as a sustainable transport corridor, serving future generations. The great news is that both Bradford and Calderdale councils now formally support the proposal. The structure would become a landmark addition to the country's cycle network, creating a strategic link between the Aire and Calder valleys.

However Highways England, who manage the tunnel for the Department for Transport, have just submitted a planning application for its abandonment, putting the structure permanently beyond use. The scheme would cost around £5 million, with 85% of the tunnel being left to collapse beneath Queensbury. The destruction of this fabulous public asset represents an entirely wasteful use of taxpayers' money.

Please OBJECT to Highways England's planning application. You can do so via Bradford Council's planning portal, you don't have to register and it needn't take more than a couple of minutes.

We've produced a short video explaining the value of Queensbury Tunnel and why it needs to be saved.

We really hope you will lend us your support again.

Thanks, on behalf of the Queensbury Tunnel Society
