In Hammanskraal, Tshwane, South Africa, we run nonprofit organizations that provide a safe haven for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our early childhood development (ECD) centres are committed to fostering growth, development, and education for these youngsters despite our limited resources.

Without any external funding, our community struggles to meet fundamental needs, one of the most pressing being access to clean water. Currently, we rely on costly water truck deliveries to ensure the children have access to clean and safe water, which places an enormous financial burden on our organization. As a result, these vital resources are channelled towards water, which should be a basic right accessible to all.

The lack of adequate water services in ECD centres poses serious threats to the health and wellbeing of our children. According to the World Health Organization, millions of deaths each year are linked to the consumption of unsafe water. Clean water is essential for maintaining hygiene and preventing waterborne diseases, particularly in environments where children are the primary occupants.

We urge local and national authorities to provide free and sustainable access to clean water for all ECD centres in Hammanskraal as a matter of urgency by providing free water deliveries.
