Secure Australia's Insulin Future - Demand Transparency in the National Medical Stockpile
The issue
Every day, my now nine-year-old son Liam relies on insulin to stay alive. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just three years old, and since then, insulin has been his lifeline. Without it, he simply wouldn’t survive. That’s our reality.
This petition began because no parent should have to wonder whether their child’s life-saving medicine is protected in a national emergency.
Australia relies almost entirely on imported insulin, leaving our supply vulnerable to global events beyond our control — from international conflicts and export bans to natural disasters and pandemics. Disruptions in shipping routes, trade tensions, or extreme weather can delay deliveries, shut down factories, or drive-up costs. When insulin is sourced from overseas, even a brief interruption can be life-threatening for people with type 1 diabetes.
The government maintains a National Medical Stockpile for emergencies. But here’s the problem: there’s no public confirmation that insulin is actually included. Families like mine are left in the dark. We’re not asking for sensitive details — just basic reassurance and transparency. Is insulin protected in case of emergency?
This campaign has already reached Parliament, and nearly 18,000 Australians have added their voices. Together, we’re calling on the Government to:
✅ Confirm whether insulin is included in the National Medical Stockpile — and if not, commit to adding it immediately.
📋 Publish a clear contingency plan so families know how insulin supply would be protected during a disruption.
🌏 Negotiate long-term supply agreements with overseas manufacturers to ensure Australia remains a priority, even in times of global shortage.
Full-scale local manufacturing may not be realistic, but local preparedness is absolutely possible. Strategic stockpiles, secure supply agreements, and transparent planning are achievable steps that will protect lives and provide peace of mind.
This isn’t about politics — it’s about safety and fairness. Every person with diabetes deserves to know that their life won’t be at risk simply because Australia failed to plan ahead.
Please sign and share this petition to give Liam — and every Australian who depends on insulin — the reassurance and protection they deserve.
Together, we can make sure no family is ever left wondering if their child will have the medicine, they need to stay alive.
