Secure Australia's Insulin Future - Demand Transparency in the National Medical Stockpile
The issue
No parent should have to lie awake wondering whether their child's life-saving insulin would be available in a national emergency. No Australian who relies on insulin should face that uncertainty. This petition began because that peace of mind matters.
Every day, my nine-year-old son Liam relies on insulin to stay alive. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just three years old, and since then, insulin has been his lifeline. Without it, he simply wouldn’t survive. That’s our reality.
Australia's insulin dependence
Australia relies almost entirely on imported insulin, leaving people who depend on it vulnerable to global disruptions beyond our control, from conflicts and export bans to natural disasters, pandemics, and internet or communications blackouts that can disrupt the digital systems used to manage orders, stock levels, and distribution. For people with type 1 diabetes, insulin is essential for survival. For many others living with diabetes, uninterrupted access is also critical to their health and wellbeing. Even a short disruption in supply could have serious consequences.
National Medical Stockpile
Australia has a National Medical Stockpile, which is designed to hold essential medical supplies for use during national emergencies. Think of it as a large national cupboard under lock and key that can be accessed when Australia faces a major crisis. But here's the problem: there is no public confirmation that insulin is included. Families like mine are left wondering whether this life-saving medicine would be available when it is needed most. We are not asking for sensitive details, just basic reassurance and transparency. Is insulin protected in an emergency?
Petition asks
✅ Transparency: Confirm whether insulin is included in the National Medical Stockpile and commit to including it if it is not.
📋 Preparedness: Publish a clear emergency plan outlining how insulin supplies would be protected and distributed during a crisis.
🌏 Security: Negotiate long-term supply agreements with overseas manufacturers to help ensure Australia remains a priority during global shortages.
Preparedness Starts Now
Full-scale insulin manufacturing in Australia may not be realistic, but preparedness is. Reliable stockpiles, secure supply agreements, and transparent planning are practical steps that can protect lives and provide peace of mind.
This isn't about politics. It's about safety, preparedness, and fairness. Every Australian who depends on insulin deserves confidence that their health and future won't be put at risk because we failed to plan ahead.
This campaign has already reached Parliament, and more than 20,000 people have added their voices. Now we're asking for action!
Please sign and share this petition to help secure greater transparency, stronger preparedness, and better protection for Liam and every Australian who relies on insulin.
