A group of students, within their rights, have chosen to protest the curricula of Matteo Ricci College (MRC)--a school that exists within Seattle University. Matteo Ricci was a Jesuit, a branch of the Catholic church that "dedicate ourselves to the “greater glory of God" and the good of all humanity. And we do so gratefully in collaboration with others who share our values, including laypersons. They have become part of the “we,” the extended Jesuit family." The Jesuits are the most liberal branch of the Church, dedicated to education and inclusion. We have no issues with students challenging the MRC curriculum. What we do challenge is their request for Jodi Kelly to step down as Dean.  Jodi has dedicated her life to students. She is a strong, intelligent, open-minded woman who has helped many students on their educational paths.  MRC has always challenged its students to challenge the status quo--and for that, we applaud the protesters. It also challenged us to think critically and come to the table for discussion. It is our hope that these students will work with Dean Kelly to uphold the MRC tradition of intellectual challenge and excellence.  As alumni, we stand with Dean Kelly and her long tradition of supporting students and Jesuit philosophy.
