The Issue
Bring Back Original Barney & Friends Seasons on TV and Blu-ray in 4K with Language Options
As fans of Barney & Friends, we grew up learning valuable lessons about friendship, teamwork, sharing, and imagination from this iconic show. The first six seasons, which aired from 1992 to 2011, hold a special place in our hearts for their educational content and memorable songs and stories. These early seasons helped shape our childhoods with their timeless lessons, and we believe they still have much to offer today’s children.
However, access to these seasons has been severely limited since they stopped airing in 2011. They have not been consistently available on streaming platforms, and only partial home media releases were ever made. Sadly, since their original airings, these episodes have been difficult to access in 1080p or 4K with restored picture quality. The lack of comprehensive releases has left fans without a proper way to enjoy these foundational seasons in modern formats.
Why Now?
The time has come to reintroduce Barney & Friends Seasons 1-6 to both old and new audiences. These episodes, rich with valuable life lessons and unforgettable songs, deserve to be preserved and shared. We believe re-airing Barney & Friends Seasons 1-6 in both English and Spanish would introduce a new generation to Barney’s timeless messages and help preserve the show’s legacy. Comprehensive Blu-ray releases would allow fans to own high-quality, physical copies of these cherished episodes, ensuring they remain accessible for years to come.
Expanding Accessibility
While Seasons 7-14 have been available on streaming platforms since their original airings, these later seasons lack the nostalgic charm and foundational lessons of the earlier ones. Unfortunately, Latin America only had access to Seasons 7-14 and missed out on the original Barney Home Videos, including rare gems like What a World We Share, Walk Around the Block, and Fun on the Farm featuring Tree-Mendous Trees.
Additionally, Barney had its own co-productions in Israel (1997-2000) and Korea (2001-2003), each offering unique episodes and content. Both productions enjoyed home media releases, and some episodes of the Israeli co-production, including those posted by Dinostalgic90 on YouTube, are accessible. However, many episodes, particularly from Season 1 and the final season of the Israeli version, remain elusive. Seasons 4-6 of the U.S. version were later dubbed into Hebrew with different actors and aired on JimJam Israel, but these have also been inaccessible on the internet. Meanwhile, the Korean co-production, despite its success, similarly lacks availability for wider audiences. These co-productions deserve 4K restorations and broader distribution to ensure their legacy is preserved.
In Italy, the Italian dub of Barney & Friends, featuring the incredible voice work of Pietro Ubaldi as Barney, also holds a special place in fans’ hearts. Songs from this dub, shared by Marialaura Carrieri on YouTube, have brought back fond memories. However, outside of Barney's Great Adventure, no home media releases of the Italian dub exist, depriving fans of the opportunity to relive these cherished moments in high quality.
International Releases and Unique Content
Beyond its English-speaking origins, Barney & Friends became a global phenomenon, with various adaptations and unique releases that remain difficult to find today:
Italy: Seasons 4-6 were dubbed in Italian and aired from 2008 to 2015 across Italy and the Italian-speaking regions of Switzerland. However, no home media releases exist for the Italian versions, except for Barney's Great Adventure.
Russia: Similarly, Russia aired Seasons 4-6, but most of the Russian-dubbed episodes from Seasons 5 and 6 are missing, including Hidden Treasures, A Very Special Mouse, and Who’s Who at the Zoo. Additionally, Season 4 is considered lost, with no known recordings or releases currently available online. No home media releases of the Russian dubs have been made.
Germany: Despite airing German-dubbed episodes, there are no available German versions of these episodes on streaming platforms or home media, except for Barney's Great Adventure, which is available on Apple TV Germany.
Additionally, several international Barney DVDs offer rare content:
Colors and Shapes was released internationally in 1997, except in the U.S. and Canada. Mexico first released it on DVD in 2001.
Greece included the bonus episode A Very Special Delivery on their DVDs, which hasn’t been released elsewhere except Venezuela.
Fun and Games appeared on Venezuelan MercadoLibre listings in 2002 but was never released in the U.S. or globally.
Barney: Fun on the Farm (formerly E-I-E-I-O) and Tree-Mendous Trees were released in Mexico, Asia, and Greece, with Greece incorporating Good Clean Fun from All Aboard for Sharing.
Greece also released Making New Friends in 2005, including episodes like On the Move, Are We There Yet, and A Splash Party, Please!, with the latter two episodes being exclusive to Greece.
Regional Favorites and Lost Media
Barney in Outer Space was first released on DVD in Mexico in 2001, though it was initially planned as the first U.S. DVD in 1999 before the release shifted to Let’s Play School.
Discovery Kids Latin America aired rare videos like Walk Around the Block and What a World We Share in the early 2000s, but these airings have since been lost.
Thailand released DVDs of Season 6 episodes in 2012, a year after Seasons 1-6 left PBS Sprout and Discovery Kids. However, Season 6 in Spanish remains largely inaccessible online, except for How Does Your Garden Grow?.
The international Barney community continues to search for missing episodes, particularly those from the Russian and Israeli dubs, as well as the complete catalog of Seasons 1-6 in Spanish.
A Personal Plea
Growing up, I couldn’t record Barney episodes due to ridicule from peers and teachers, a common experience for many fans. The absence of these beloved seasons on modern platforms feels like a lost opportunity for today’s generation. This petition aims to correct the oversight of limited access to Barney & Friends Seasons 1-6, ensuring that these cherished episodes are restored and preserved for the future.
What We Want
We are calling on networks, distributors, and home media companies like Warner Bros., Universal Kids, PBS, and Shout! Factory to:
Re-air Barney & Friends Seasons 1-6 on television and streaming platforms.
Release the complete Seasons 1-6 on Blu-ray in 4K quality.
Include language options such as Spanish, Hebrew, Korean, Italian, and Russian.
Restore and release rare international co-productions and episodes globally.
Together, we can ensure Barney’s love, lessons, and laughter continue to inspire generations. Sign this petition and make your voice heard!
Let’s bring Barney back in all his 4K glory for the world to enjoy!
