Re: Manufacturing Defect Resulting in Serious Injury from Kenmore Electric Range Model # 790.9611340F; Incident: August 12, 2015

On or about April 28, 2010, I purchased a Kenmore Electric Range Model # 790.9611340F from Sears, 11033 Carolina Place Pkwy Pineville, North Carolina 28134.

When I purchased the electric range it was already fully assembled and was delivered to my home a few weeks later and installed by Sears’ appliance installation services. At that time, I also purchased a 3-year protection/maintenance agreement.

On August 12, 2014, while preparing a meal for her family, my leg was sliced open by the sharp jagged edge of the oven door when I brushed the edge of the door with my leg.

An instant later, feeling the pain from the laceration of the stainless steel trim on the oven door, I put my hand over the wound only to discover that I was bleeding profusely and a puddle of blood soon began to develop on the floor. Soon after, I went to urgent care for sutures. Later, I also found a chunk of my tissue/fat in the top corner of the over door.

After being stabilized by medical professionals, I was treated for “laceration of left lower leg.” Unfortunately, because of the amount of skin and tissue lost during the incident, the first medical provider could only suture half of the laceration and wrapped the other half of the laceration in gauze. I was then instructed to see a different medical provider the following day at a different location to complete the suturing of my leg.

My Kenmore Range Model # 790.9611340F was manufactured and sold to me in a defective and dangerous condition. The range literally sliced my leg open like a knife and has left a terrible scar.

Since then I have contacted Sears (Seller) and Electrolux (Manufacturer) and have requested that they expand their recall of these dangerously designed rangers. They have not done so to date.

I have also searched for additional reports of incidences on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website and have found the following similar incidence reported (lacerations due to stainless steel on their Kenmore ranges) here http://www.saferproducts.gov/Search/AdvancedSearch.aspx:
