Sexual Health Course for SD42

The Issue

B.C High Schools need to be teaching students sexual health.

Despite SD42's declaration that it's secondary students will gain healthy decision making skills, Sex Education is only taught for one week in students 10th grade P.E classes. This is not enough for students to develop any understanding of healthy sexual decision making and it does not allow for in depth learning on important topics that prepare students for life after high school. In the results of a survey I conducted in 2021, the majority of students reported feeling dissatisfied with their current sex-education and believe it should be refreshed once a year.

I graduated from SD42 in 2021 and since then have continued to advocate for an updated Sex-Ed course in the district. To make effective change, the district would have to provide this course to grades 8-12 and update the course curriculum. The district needs to include topics on LGBTQ2+ health, pleasure, sex stigma in the media and its effects on youth, menstruation, sexual violence, consent, BIPOC experiences, and so much more. I have started this petition because I will need support to show the district that students truly want this course to be available and deserve a well rounded education. Please help me make this a reality and share with other students!!!

In solidarity,

Sam
