The Issue

I moved to the tranquil countryside near Huntly, Scotland, searching for a peaceful life surrounded by uninterrupted views, flourishing wildlife, and a stress-free environment. Yet, the serenity we cherish is now under threat due to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks' (SSEN) proposal to construct a massive 400kV substation and a 2GW HVDC converter station at Cruchie.

The proposed building project would destroy beautiful and productive agricultural land, forever altering our peaceful rural valley into an industrial zone. The scale and scope of this project mean that residents living nearby will face lifelong visual blight, increased noise pollution, and frequent disturbance from traffic and lighting. The mental health and property values of many will be significantly impacted.

Positioned right beside a river that supports protected wildlife, including otters, this project's environmental implications are significant. Scotland already fulfills its renewable electricity needs, and any additional projects should not come at the cost of our precious local environment and well-being.

The drive behind this proposal appears to be more about meeting export demands for profit rather than addressing local energy needs. Alternative sites exist, which would have a less damaging impact on both people and wildlife, and remain within Scotland's capability to generate surplus renewable energy.

We must advocate for sustainable projects that respect both our communities and ecosystems. Call on your elected officials, environmental agencies, and SSEN to reconsider these plans and explore viable alternatives. Help us protect our countryside from unnecessary industrialisation and preserve it for future generations.

Please sign this petition to urge the authorities to put our community and environmental well-being first and find a less harmful location for the substation.
