Hi All
Incredible. We have just passed the 800,000 mark. We cannot thank you enough for giving the Scottish wildcat a voice and for demonstrating to the relevant decision makers that saving the wildcat matters to people. No other British Wildlife petition has ever reached this milestone and it is all down to you, signing, sharing this page and spreading the word.
We thought this would be an opportune time to take stock and provide and update on where we currently are.
We are a relatively small but very determined team made up on conservationists, ecologists, vets, legal professionals and field workers and there are multiple work streams ongoing at the moment.
Here are some of the main areas of activity.
1. Bern Convention - On the back of our complaint and evidence we provided, the Bern Convention, an International treaty, has opened a case file to investigate the failings of the Scottish Government to protect the Scottish wildcat. The key documents can be found in the news section of our website
The government has until the 31 st July to respond. We are aware that all relevant and potentially liable government departments have been contacted and are gathering information. We await their response with interest and will have both legal professionals and ecological consultants on hand to scrutinise their response. This is a landmark case file and the first time an international and independent body will look at what we believe (and can demonstrate) are clear failings by the government departments to save the wildcat. We will of course update you as soon as we hear anything.
2. Police Scotland- We have reported what we believe to be illegal logging activities in the Clashindarroch by Forestry Commission Scotland. The police incident number is PS-20200629-0979
We have provided details of multiple logging incidents that have occurred in key wildcat areas in the middle of the breeding season. We stand ready to provide whatever information the police need to conduct their investigation and have already provided numerous documents, pictures and pieces of evidence.
3. Exposing wrongdoing- No one in our team is afraid to speak out against animal cruelty or to report wildlife crime if we see it. You will note that over the past few months we have provided you with evidence of government agencies using dog packs to hunt foxes in potential wildcat areas, of zoos who are apparently leading efforts to breed wildcats yet the reality is that they have been exploiting kittens for publicity and then neutering them later as known hybrids. We know that sometimes this makes uncomfortable reading and that some of you may even have supported the organisations carrying out these activities. Hopefully you can see that our only wish is to protect the last wildcats in the wild and we have of course backed up all our claims with unambiguous evidence.
4. Field work- We are a grass roots conservation project and we love going out into the forest to try and get images of wildcats on camera. It is so important to every aspect of our work and it is a great thrill every time we see one. We currently have cameras deployed that will be collected in a couple of weeks and we hope to get some wildcats on camera and hopefully a beautiful kitten. Again we will share any images that we get.
It is no exaggeration to say that we are working flat out at the moment and there are 2 major announcements that we will be making soon which we are very excited to share with you, so keep watching and thanks for your support.
Just like the last wildcats we won’t give up.
