I would like to thank you for signing my petition for a Royal Commission into the Aged Care sector. Whilst a great victory has been achieved, the work isn't over. We need to ensure that the terms and conditions of the Royal Commission allow for a thorough and detailed examination of what is really going on. If you watched the 4 Corner report last week you will have seen stories about abuse, neglect and greed (profit) being put ahead of care for our elderly. From a personal perspective the segment about atrocious food being served to residents really rings a bell. I know that my mother in law has been served pureed food when on particular dietary restrictions due to ill health. I know she has bee served tomato paste foodstuffs despite having an allergy or being told to go without. I know she has done days without any food at all because she has been confined to her room due to a stress fracture in her ankle as a result of ostio. I know that even on a good day the food she is served isn't fit nutritian for a dog, let alone a human being. Not surprising that over 30% of our elderly are malnourished. Spending $6 per day on food is simply atrocious. I know my father in law almost died from a simple urinary track infection due to inadequate care. Reporting these problems is in itself a problem because of the risk of retaliation under the current system. OK - so I'm rambling, but that is what the stress that these situations cause. Yet my stress as a caring relative is nothing compared to that which those in aged care must be suffering. We have achieved the first milestone. We have got our Royal Commission, but we have to keep fighting.
