Saskatchewan Petition for a Plebiscite on Separation

Saskatchewan Petition for a Plebiscite on Separation

The Issue

The topic of separation affects every person in our province.

We are facing unfair transfer payments through continued changes to the equalization formula. The payments through our taxes to other provinces are only going to increase in the future. The yearly total was 18.3 billion in 2017/2018, which will only increase to 22.1 billion by 2022/2023.

The government has raised the cost of fuel through the carbon tax which causes higher prices to our transport sector, which leads to higher prices on the shelves of stores. The federal government in power only wishes to increase this tax.

They have also mishandled foreign relations with several major countries, such as India, China, and the US. This only leads to further isolating our previously growing province. We did not need this to be piled on top of the gaping wound that exists in Canada... in the East.

To add insult to injury, we have no say in the nation's government and our votes do not matter on a national scale. Even if we all reject who the Greater Toronto Area decides to put into office, the sitting government has power over our province. This was shown clearly for any to see, through Trudeau's rejection of Scott Moe's requests.

The main reason to push for a plebiscite over a referendum is that it does not matter who has the most seats in the legislative assembly. It does not matter if the incumbent premier rejects a call for a plebiscite or referendum. A plebiscite can be started through a petition such as this and regardless of who is in power, providing there is enough signatures, we can make it happen. A referendum on the other hand cannot be started by the people.
