Daniel Dejon Hughes was an amazing son, brother, uncle, nephew, classmate, teammate, and friend. His smile was like sunshine and would light up any room he walked into. He loved many things, but his top four were his parents, family, friends, & football. Daniel was an outstanding leader and athlete with potential beyond his years. Sadly, Daniel’s life was cut short due to a senseless act of gun violence.
Since Daniel’s murder the outpouring of love and support has been incredible. In Daniel’s honor, trending hashtags #LLDH and #LL9 have been created and displayed all over social media with tens of thousands of views and engagements. Many have used the number 9 which is the number of the football jersey he wore for Vanden High School, in custom clothes, car decals, tattoo memorials, custom jewelry, wristbands, lanyards, and other items. Daniel had over a thousand people attend his funeral service in Napa and was mentioned in graduation speeches not only at Vanden the school he attended but in neighboring schools, as an embodiment of hope and motivation for the youth in our community. Whenever the Hughes family leaves their home, they are made aware in some way of the amazing love this community has for Daniel. I believe it shows that this community is in support of a public and permanent memorial honoring Daniel.
We believe the best way to show honor to Daniel, would be to name the Vanden High School Football Stadium after him with the support of the family. This stadium is where Daniel practiced the craft that he loved; it is also the field where he played his last football game just two days before he was shot. The name that is bestowed on this stadium should be a representative of the person who embodies all that a stadium stands for – students, hard work, leadership, teamwork, passion, togetherness, recreation, and enjoyment. It should be in honor of someone who has made a significant impact on the people that use the stadium, and I believe that Daniel epitomizes all that, and more.
I am presenting this petition to name the Vanden High School Football stadium after Daniel Dejon Hughes. The football FIELD is currently named after George A. Gammon, the first Superintendent of Travis Unified School District. We do not wish to change or alter the monument of the field on Markley Lane. However we wish to honor Daniels memory by including him in the appropriate setting which is why this petition is proposing the stadium be first known as and forever known as the Daniel Dejon Hughes Stadium. As the high schools football stadium is currently today not named after anyone and only the football field being named after Mr. Gammons memory. Naming the stadium would be a great way to ensure that Daniel is remembered for the great student-athlete he was. Just as important, this also allows us to honor Daniel and keep his name and memory alive.
“We will never get over the loss of Daniel, but a soul so beautiful should never be forgotten.” Katie Marshman.
We ask that you please sign this petition. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
