The FCPS committee to change Family Life Education has recommended controversial changes, so it is important that everyone provide the school board with comments voicing opposition to these changes.
email: FLEComments@fcps.edu prior to June 8th with your comments.
Below is a link to the FLECAC recommended guidelines, and a sample letter you can use, or modify, to voice your opposition.
Dear FCPS School Board members,
I oppose many of the recommended changes to the FLE curriculum, and agree with the remarks given in the FLECAC dissenting opinion.
I oppose replacing the term "Biological Sex" with "Sex Assigned at Birth". "Biological Sex" is the correct biological term to use as it is scientifically correct and is not objectionable. "Sex assigned at birth" is ideologically charged and not the appropriate term in the context of Family Life Education.
I oppose the removal of "Clergy" from the list of trusted adults. To many students, their clergy is absolutely an appropriate person to suggest counseling with if they have any questions or concerns on sensitive topics, such as sex or sexuality.
I oppose recommendation of adding content about the controversial pre-exposure prophylactics with children. Presenting kids with information about these drugs give a false sense of security and may encourage risky behavior in children.
I also would like children to be presented with all the side effects and risks of using any medications referenced throughout Family Life Education.
I am also in favor of keeping the current language that abstinence is the only 100% effective method for preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
Please consider my comments, and please vote against these changes to the FLE guidelines.
Thank you,
