All Children in Foster Care Should Qualify for an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
The Issue
The statistics on children in foster care are staggering. 1/4 won’t graduate from high school. 50% of boys will go on to commit a crime. The list goes on. Schools overlook these children and often utilize discipline, instead of interventions. These children have or are experiencing serious trauma. Acting out due to their hurts is completely normal and they need assistance, not condemnation. The discipline only reinforces what these children believe about themselves, that they are not good enough for anyone or anything. These are children that are in this circumstance through no fault of their own.
My hope is that by allowing these children to qualify for IEPs, they can get the support and guidance they need to succeed. Currently, a medical diagnosis is needed for an IEP, let’s change that! Will you join me?
