Hello Everyone,

The counseling association I teamed up with was invited to speak to the director of SCDHHS on 01/16/2024. It was a 30-minute talk and he didn't show up. We met with the 2nd in charge (someone I spoke to 2 years ago) and someone else that is new to me on this initiative.

I felt mixed feelings when it was revealed the director wasn't going to be attending the meeting. I have waited 3 years to talk to the director. I had a prepared statement, and I read it to the ladies that were present. I also quoted James Baldwin.

I don't feel our petition has reached a victory. There were some good things that came from this most recent talk with SCDHHS aka SC Medicaid. SCDHHS is seeking feedback from mental health professionals and the patients (awesome idea). SCDHHS has taken note of the work environment past Behavioral Health Directors created for mental health professionals. SCDHHS acknowledged there was a wall between the mental health professionals and some of their staff members (thank you for the acknowledgement). SCDHHS also offered for the counseling association to serve as a link/voice for the 600 plus licensed professionals they serve (2nd awesome idea). One of the committe members has volunteered to be that link or liason (a healthcare consultant) since she's still in-network with Medicaid. I will support the counseling association to nurture a healthy work environment with SCDHHS. And, that's where I feel my faith has shown me, the petition, all the major contributors, and the community favor. Each side heard each other and we are taking steps to work together. I am appreciative of that! Thank you Lord!

I am hoping for fairness in how SCDHHS treats in-network mental health professionals moving forward. I am hoping SCDHHS values the level of commitment and professionalism seasoned licensed mental health professionals bring to table when they are in-network with Medicaid. Lastly, I am also hoping SCDHHS is just, fair, and equal when they conduct future Medicaid Audits for in-network providers. I stress the in-network element because I choose not to be in-network or walking away from accepting Medicaid direct payments. My faith has shown me where I need to stand on this issue, but I am still committed to the cause and work that needs to done to achieve a just, fair, and equal work environment for mental health professionals.
