The Issue

The lands of Plumas County, California, are renowned for their breathtaking beauty and ecological diversity. As residents and stewards of this unique environment, we have a responsibility to ensure the preservation of our forests for generations to come. Unfortunately, the United States Forest Service (USFS) plans to implement the widespread use of herbicides within our cherished landscapes. This decision threatens not only our local flora and fauna but also the health and wellbeing of our community members.

Research has shown that many of the herbicides proposed by the USFS contain harmful chemicals that can leach into soil and water systems, posing significant risks to biodiversity and public health. An article in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives highlights the detrimental effects of certain herbicides, such as glyphosate, which is linked to a range of health issues including cancer and hormonal disruptions. Moreover, the invasive nature of herbicides can disrupt the ecological balance, leading to a decline in native plant species and a negative impact on wildlife habitats.

Instead of relying on chemical interventions, we propose alternative, sustainable methods of forest management. Practices such as mechanical thinning, controlled burns, and the promotion of native plant growth are effective in maintaining ecosystem health without the adverse effects associated with toxic substances. These methods align with the principles of regenerative agriculture and have been successfully implemented in numerous communities across the nation.

By signing this petition, you will send a clear message to the USFS and other decision-makers that Plumas County does not support the use of harmful herbicides. We demand a commitment to environmentally friendly practices that prioritize the health of our forests and the people who live alongside them.

Join us in standing up for the future of Plumas County and safeguarding the natural resources that we all cherish. Please sign this petition to protect our home from the unnecessary risks posed by the use of herbicides.
