Say No to Tolls on the I-69 Bridge: Fairness for Indiana and Kentucky!
The Issue
Who is impacted?
Tolling the future I-69 bridge would hurt working families, commuters, and small businesses in the Evansville-Henderson region. Many people will rely on this corridor for work, school, and daily life. Adding a toll would increase costs for those who can least afford it.
What is at stake?
The US 41 southbound bridge is planned to be demolished, leaving only two free lanes of travel on the remaining northbound span. This will lead to heavier traffic and longer wait times on the free route, pushing many drivers onto the new tolled I-69 bridge. The added cost and congestion will burden residents and businesses alike. During initial planning and public input, residents were never asked whether they supported a toll-free option for everyone, only what level of toll was acceptable. Tolls on a publicly funded bridge undermine fairness and ignore the financial contributions this region already makes to state infrastructure.
Why is now the time to act?
Information has been requested to initiate the vendor selection process for toll collection. A tolling vendor is already being explored and final decisions are approaching. If we don’t act now, tolls could become locked in for decades. People overwhelmingly oppose tolls on roads funded by their own tax dollars, and with Evansville being a tax-exporting region, we already contribute more to state revenue than we get back. Let’s not be charged twice. Sign this petition to stop tolls and keep travel accessible and fair for everyone in our region.
