Say No to Rezoning Near Crestwood Drive – Prevent Increased Flooding & Congestion!
The Issue
PETITION TO OPPOSE DEVELOPMENT NEAR CRESTWOOD DRIVE DUE TO FLOODING & TRAFFIC CONCERNS
To: The Town of Summerville Planning Commission
Re: Annexation & Development Proposal Near Bacons Bridge Rd & Crestwood Dr.
We, the undersigned residents of the Crestwood community and surrounding areas, strongly oppose the proposed annexation and development near Bacons Bridge Road and Crestwood Drive. Our opposition is based on two critical concerns:
1. Increased Flooding Risks
• This area already experiences flooding issues, with a canal directly behind many properties.
• The increased presence of impervious surfaces, such as pavement and buildings, reduces the land’s capacity to absorb rainfall, resulting in excessive runoff. Several roads in the neighborhood remain wet year-round due to drainage issues, and the area is built on a spring. Which we already have seen at the new school Summerville, preparatory Academy with the flooding they happened earlier this year
• Additional strain on the existing drainage system could worsen flooding in our neighborhood, putting homes and properties at risk.
2. Worsening Traffic Congestion & Safety Hazards
• Over the past year, traffic congestion in this area has significantly increased, making daily commutes and neighborhood travel more difficult.
• Additional development will bring more vehicles, leading to further delays, increased accidents, and safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists. There already has been multiple deaths
• Bacons Bridge Road is already a heavily traveled route, and adding more traffic will negatively impact residents and local businesses.
Additional Environmental Concerns
Many residents have expressed deeper concerns about the land being developed:
• How much of the acreage is currently wetlands? Developing on wetlands can disrupt natural drainage and worsen flooding.
• How much of this area involves building on live springs below the existing ground? Live springs could create long-term structural risks for buildings and roads.
• What infrastructure will be put in place to support this development, and where will it be located? Without proper planning, new construction could strain existing roads, utilities, and drainage systems.
We respectfully urge the Town of Summerville Planning Commission to reject this annexation and development proposal until a thorough environmental impact study is conducted and clear solutions are provided to address flooding, traffic congestion, and environmental stability.
